Atheists and theists have differing views about spirituality. In this post a dictionary definition of “spirituality” will be used, namely, ‘something consisting of spirit : not corporeal’.
Quite a number of years ago, enrolled in an Anthropology class in an Alberta university, I read a related book which described the life of a given tribe of people. The book made mention of physical material moving about their residence with no apparent involvement from a physical force. At the time this seemed unlikely, if not impossible.
As the years progressed I did research on major world religions such as Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and others. It became clear that most, if not all, have incorporeal aspects as part of their belief. Research into small-scale belief systems such as New Age, Spiritualism, Martial Arts, Wicca and Satanism, show they also have incorporeal features that come into play in the exercise of their faith.
The purpose of this current post is not to suggest which forenamed beliefs are right or wrong, but to prompt those who are unbelievers to see whether a wrong conclusion has been made about the question of spirituality. One way of doing this is to talk to those who are actively practicing their faith, preferably those who are leaders. They should be able to offer some information or evidence. In addition there are, of course, many other sources of information.
There are many debates about whether there is a Supreme Being and debates can be helpful. But perhaps it would be a good idea to first determine whether there are minor incorporeal elements as part of our world. If so, then it becomes easier to consider whether there is a Supreme Being.
Those who would argue that there are no incorporeal elements need to realize that there is no means to prove such a belief. Incorporeal spiritual aspects of any kind can not be assessed in a lab and neither can logic finally resolve this question. That is why the answer needs to be found elsewhere.
Life is a fleeting thing so we need to be careful what we do with it. That’s why it’s important to get the question of spirituality resolved.
